Niche Site Updater (NSU) by Dave Toomey and Jeff Carson is a NEW automatic WordPress updating application that works on both Windows and MAC.
I know Dave and Jeff personally, and I’m not one to push products (TBH: most are crap). But being a monthly subscriber to ManageWP I was intrigued to see what Niche Site Updater can do and most importantly – if it “works”!
BTW: I’ve been looking for a replacement for ManageWP as it tends to use a lot of overhead in WordPress (slows responsiveness).
To be honest I’m usually very suspicious of products. I have very high standards and expect them to work as you would like them to.
So before I even thought about telling my peeps about it; I had to give it a test run…
Firstly, I found a site that I KNOW I haven’t updated in a while. It was still running an older version of WordPress V3.2.1.
See the screen capture below:

Oh, notice this site has 2 updates available (I had already updated the themes), the other update was for BackupBuddy – a “premium” plugin. And of course the 2nd was for WordPress itself.
So I added this site along with a few other of my online marketing sites into NSU and gave it a test (my other sites were all pretty much up to date already, but I wanted to see if it connected properly, checked, and worked).

But Dave Toomey from NSU says it’s easy to create backups – just download and activate this plugin first on your sites: WP-DB-Backup plugin
Honestly, I haven’t tried it, but he tells me it’s covered in training video #6 in the members area.
Anyway…
I pressed the update button and “BOOM!”… within 30 seconds it had processed all the sites (obviously it’ll take longer the more sites you add).

I hit the refresh button on my exisitng site’s dashboard and...
…it was updated! No problems. Even BackupBuddy (paid plugin) was updated!

If you want to see “exactly” how Niche Site Updater (NSU) works then watch this video below – it’s so easy:
If you’re looking for something to update ALL your WordPress sites automatically then you can’t go far wrong with NSU.
Take a look at why it’s so good below:
- Automatically update all your WordPress sites from you computer (no logging in online and waiting for your sites to load malarky).
- No additional plugins needed for it to work properly (unlike ManageWP with “overheads”).
- NSU is not subscription based. One time payment for lifetime access and updates.
- Works on both Windows and MAC computers.
- These guys are “reputable” marketers, their products are always fully supported and updated.
- Costs far less than many (probably all) other products out there.
- Did I say: “It WORKS!“?
I also haven’t yet mentioned that it doesn’t just come with a crappy download. It’s comes with a full-blown membership area with lots of well produced videos that you can access directly from Niche Site Updater.
See below the tabs within Niche Site Updater:

Click the link from the “training” tab within NSU and it’ll take you directly to the training area (pretty cool eh?
)

If you have multiple sites there’s nothing worse than having to update them all individually. NSU allows you to update your WordPress sites and Plugins all by the push of a button.
But I will admit Niche Site Updater doesn’t have all the “functionality” of ManageWP, but unlike ManageWP it doesn’t affect your site speed and isn’t a “subscription” service.
NSU is designed for a specific purpose;
to backup and upgrade your WordPress sites.
*KISS*
Keep It Simple, Stupid. The principal works.

Add a commentWell, I checked it out and it has some appeal. Unfortunately, not nearly enough for me to buy it. I asked on the forum whether they would consider adding the ability to input the backup plugin of our choice (rather than being stuck with the inferior, free one) as well as being able to login directly from NSU to our blogs. Dave answered that adding stuff is called "feature creep" and that they won't be adding anything to it. Personally, I call it "when the market speaks, product creators should listen", but that's just me. So, thanks, but no thanks. If it had those two things, I'd have bought it. Without them, it's only another clunky, semi-functional tool that only goes part of the way there. Maybe I'd appreciate it more if I had dozens of blogs? But for only a half dozen or so, it's just way too limited in what it does.
Hey Russ,
I appreciate your feedback
I totally agree with being able to use it with a backup plugin of choice. For example I use BackupBuddy.
However, it does what it says on the tin and ins't expensive like other tools. ManageWP does have a much more comprehensive range of features but it's a monthly subscription and can be costly for peeps that are not yet making money online.
This is an alternative. A one-fee tool that updates your blogs and plugins. Personally I've had some issues with ManageWP – such as it won't install my premium plugins I add to the repository across my sites and the backup feature doesn't work (at least on RackSpace Cloud Sites).
I also find ManageWP a little "slow" to load sites and navigate – however it is a good service. Just hope to see a new version with some more bug fixes.
For the peeps that don't need all the features of ManageWP, then the Niche Site Updater is a good fit. It's cheap, and it works.
Thanks again for your feedback Russ, take care and keep in touch

WSO Plugins…ughh.
looks interesting and I've seen their amazon stuff before. also use ManageWP but this does seem decent if you can control sites from different hosts and cpanels. Besides backup buddy, there is a free cloning/backup plugin that works similar

There are free alternatives though Mark.. See http://infinitewp.com. It does almost everything niche site updater does but free..
